Waste Heat Recovery from Chilled Water Systems

Existing or new facilities can now benefit from lower energy costs and significantly reduced Scope 1 & 2 Carbon emissions by incorporating a Pure Thermal Heat Recovery system into their facility or process.

In basic terms, the Heat Recovery system enables the production of hot water or heating outputs by recycling waste heat from either air or liquid flows.

This is achieved by using proven technology with systems that recycle the maximum amount of available waste energy to meet the required demand either in a direct runaround configuration or with Heat Pump included.

Providing Industrial Heat Recovery Systems on a Supply & Commission/Maintain basis the Pure Thermal approach is application based with a committed approach to providing best advice from the initial concept through to more detailed Heat Pump Selection & Specification discussions.

Both Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Recovery from Air Systems and Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Recovery from Liquid Systems can provide very high temperature up to 120°C whist operating with the Lowest Global Warming/Low Carbon Systems.

Whether satisfying a retrofit application or a new project Pure Thermal has a range of high specification Industrial Heat Recovery Systems from 30kW to 3000kW+ in capacity to match a specific applications demands.

    What is Heat Recovery?

Heat recovery is the process of capturing waste heat generated by cooling systems and repurposing it for heating and hot water production. In industrial and commercial settings, cooling and refrigeration systems produce large amounts of excess thermal energy, which is typically expelled into the atmosphere as waste. Pure Thermal’s heat recovery technology enables businesses to reclaim this energy, transforming it into a zero-cost, zero-carbon source of heating. By integrating heat recovery systems, businesses can increase energy efficiency, reduce reliance on fossil fuel heating, and significantly lower operating costs. The process is based on proven technology, designed to seamlessly capture and convert waste heat into usable thermal energy. As industries move toward sustainable energy solutions, heat recovery provides a practical, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional heating methods, ensuring that no energy is wasted while improving overall system efficiency.

Application flexibility is key which is why Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Recovery Systems are able to operate with a source supply hierarchy based on highest temperature first. This delivers both the lowest operating costs and the highest levels of carbon savings. Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Recovery Systems are available with a variety of configuration options to match an applications requirement.

As an example, many manufacturing facilities utilise cooling at the same time as producing hot water and heating via gas, oil or LPG quite often the cooling demand will exceed the hot water requirement which means that the energy required to produce hot water can be easily satisfied, via recycled waste energy.

Waste heat can be recycled by other means such as a direct waste heat collector being located within a hot production area which is able to utilise the residual waste heat from a manufacturing/production process and redirect this heat to remove or displace fossil fuel use.

For larger applications, the Pure Thermal PLUS SO System delivers a capacity of up to 3000kW+ providing the next generation of large capacity Industrial Heat Recycling Systems.

Where waste heat recycling is required on a flexible basis to match the rejected heat from variable timed process operations then a Pure Thermal FLEX Waste Heat Recovery System can operate with dual or multiple waste heat streams.

Source Heat Pump but importantly also has the ability to operate with a second source to provide increased levels of efficiency.

For example, an application may have a rejected waste heat capacity that varies in time and capacity, this means that a waste heat flow is available only at certain times of the day which the Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Recovery System would collect and store/accumulate for use later in a shift or process.

If this accumated heat capacity needs supplementing, then the system could use a second source such as external air to provide additional heat capacity if the waste heat supply is low in capacity or if the system requires additional heat supply resilience.

Industrial Heat Recovery Systems can be provided by Pure Thermal for both retrofit and new projects.

Identifying the most appropriate system design is key to any project and to assist in this process Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Recovery Systems can be provided with a Heat Recovery Ready Verification Service which identifies the most appropriate & available system options to deliver the highest level of efficiency.

At this stage, the type of Heat Recovery System is secondary as the focus is on providing best advice based on the opportunity that the application presents.

    What is Heat Recovery

Heat Recovery is the recycling of waste heat which is a by-product of any cooling process. Pure Thermal Heat Recovery utilises practical and proven technology to recycle this waste heat in order to produce free and zero carbon heating and hot water.

    What are the Applications

    • Production/process cooling systems
    • Air conditioning chillers
    • 52-week duplication of cooling and hot water demands

    Why Choose Heat Recovery

Heat recovery can be an extremely cost-effective and practical means of achieving savings with respect to both carbon and energy costs. The recycled waste heat is already being produced by the cooling or refrigeration system and at present is rejected to atmosphere i.e. total waste.

    Commercial Applications

Existing or new facilities can now benefit from significantly reduced energy costs by incorporating a Pure Thermal Heat Recovery system into their installation.

In basic terms, the Heat Recovery system enables simultaneous cooling and hot water or heating outputs by recycling waste heat.

This is achieved by using proven technology that combines both cooling and heating outputs; this system recycles the maximum amount of available waste energy to meet the required demand.

    • Reduce or displace fossil fuels that are currently used for hot water production
    • Retrofit into existing sites
    • Specify for new installations
    • Achieve significant levels of carbon reduction

    Production/Manufacturing Applications

Many manufacturing facilities utilise cooling at the same time as producing hot water and heating via gas, oil or LPG. A Pure Thermal site survey will identify opportunities to recycle the waste heat from cooling in order to achieve energy and carbon savings.

Quite often the cooling demand will exceed the hot water requirement which means that the energy required to produce hot water can be easily satisfied, via recycled energy.

    • Produce energy for heating or hot water
    • Replace or reduce direct electric hot water production
    • Replace or reduce gas fired hot water production
    • Produce virtually FREE recycled energy
    • Produce virtually ZERO CARBON recycled energy

*Efficiency will be dependent on individual project conditions and requirements, an individual illustration can be provided with regard to capital cost, operational costs and return on capital, based on actual site specific information.
